NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Those who lost their homes to foreclosure during the housing crash could soon be getting some much needed help from the Tennessee Attorney General's office.
The Tennessee Attorney General's office said 37,000 homeowners should receive claim forms beginning this week. Those who receive one may be eligible to share part of the National Mortgage Foreclosure Settlement.
Eligible borrowers include those who lost their homes to foreclosure between January 1, 2008, and December 31, 2011, to one of the nation's five largest mortgage servicers. They are Ally/GMAC, Bank of America, Citi, JPMorgan Chase and Wells Fargo.
"It's a simple one page claim form. All they have to do is check a couple of boxes, sign it and return it in the prepaid envelope," said Jennifer Peacock with the Attorney General's Office.
The settlement includes about $1.5 billion for qualified borrowers who lost their homes to foreclosure. The exact payment will depend upon the number of borrowers who participate.
In Tennessee, packets are being mailed to eligible borrowers beginning this week and continuing through October 12.
Claims forms can be mailed back or filed online at http://www.nationalmortgagesettlement.com.
Homeowners have until January 18, 2013 to file the claims.
