NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Police said a man who shot and killed his uncle on Thursday night claimed it was in self-defense.
Police said 31-year-old Leondra Ridley told police he was called to the home on Mallory Street shortly before 6 p.m. by family members who told him that 55-year-old James Ridley, Jr. had shown up intoxicated and was violent.
Three children, ages 4, 6, and 7, hid in a closet with their mother due to their fear of James Ridley, according to police.
When Leondra Ridley arrived, he said he and James Ridley got into a fight. During the fight, Leondra shot his uncle one time in the chest. James Ridley was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where he died.
Leondra, who has a valid handgun permit, waited at the scene for police and was interviewed. He told police the shooting was in self-defense. No charges have been filed against him.
Police detectives will review their findings with the District Attorney's Office at the conclusion of the investigation.
