NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - An election official said that problems with electronic voting machines in Metro Nashville during the primary election were caused by inaccurate programming.

Several prominent Democrats were given Republican ballots in the primary in some precincts.

Election Commissioner Steve Abernathy said that the vendor had programmed the electronic poll books for a closed primary instead of an open one.

Abernathy said the company has changed the software to prevent the problem from occurring again. Even so, the election commission has opted not to use the electronic machines in November's general election.
