Human Skull Found At Construction Site

Posted: Updated:

NASHVILLE, Tenn.- Metro Police said that a human skull has been uncovered at a local construction site.

The skull was found at a building site in East Nashville near Cleveland and Lischey Avenues. An archeological team has been called out to investigate after Metro Police determined that body was not a homicide case.

Officials said that workers hit a burial site when digging the foundation for a mixed use apartment building. One human skeleton has been recovered from the sites. A spokesperson from the Department of Environment and Conservation said that the area could be part of a historic  family lot, or a single burial. Additional investigation around the intact remains exposed a grave shaft, button and coffin nail.  This positively defined the burial as historic.

The skeleton was turned over to the state for further research. Although an exact time period has not been determined, officials have ruled out the possibility that the skeleton was Native American or pre-historic.  Crews from the archeological team plan to use historical mapping to determine what could have been at that location and who the bones might belong to.

According to officials the owners of the land could get a court order to remove the remains or they could decide to cover the area and continue building. It was not clear what the property owner might choose to do.
