Prosecutors Drop Murder Charges In Jackson Beating

Posted: Updated:

JACKSON, Tenn. (AP) - Prosecutors said they have dropped charges for eight men accused of fatally beating a Jackson man.

Jackson Police Chief Gill Kendrick and District Attorney Jerry Woodall issued a joint news release Tuesday saying that murder charges have been dismissed in the death of 35-year-old Antwan Brooks because of problems with witness credibility.

Brooks was found beaten to death in the middle of a road in Jackson on August 5. Two witnesses were interviewed, and nine men were charged based on their statements.

Investigators dropped charges against Byron Purdy on August 14 because it was found that he was at work when the murder was committed.

Investigators also found that three other men had solid alibis, and prosecutors determined that the witnesses were no longer credible.
