Protesters Kept Far From Debate Crowds

Posted: Updated:

DANVILLE, Ky. (AP) -- Protesters who showed up outside the vice presidential debate to publicize their causes were restricted to an area far from the day's festivities at Centre College.

The Lexington Herald-Leader reported Thursday that the field that had been set aside for speakers was nearly empty except for those who had registered for a chance to speak for up to 20 minutes.

Clarence Wyatt, co-chairman of the college's debate steering committee, said the separate area had also been set up for the 2000 vice presidential debate hosted at Centre. He said the move was the best way to balance free speech with the need to control the locations where crowds gather and high-profile politicians are expected.
