NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- A Tennessee congressman, in his first public comments since reports that he once urged a mistress to get an abortion, said the woman did not turn out to be pregnant.
Rep. Scott DesJarlais on Thursday did not further dispute a transcript of a recorded phone conversation in which he suggests to the woman they travel to Atlanta "to get this solved." His statement came in an interview with WTN-FM host Ralph Bristol.
DesJarlais acknowledged he was going through a difficult divorce at the time, and blamed his ex-wife, the congressman he defeated in 2010 and his current Democratic opponent for publicizing details from his past.
The Tennessee Republican Party appears to be publicly standing by the embattled congressman, though other GOP leaders in the state have declined to get.
