Meningitis Kills Michigander After Indiana Injection

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - A Michigan Department of Community Health spokeswoman said a southern Michigan resident has died from fungal meningitis after being injected with a tainted back pain medication at an Indiana clinic.

Spokeswoman Angela Minicuci said Thursday the Cass County, Michigan, resident contracting the disease while being treated for back pain in Indiana. She provided no further details.

Cass County is a few miles north of South Bend and Elkhart.

Indiana Health Department spokesman Ken Severson confirms an out-of-state resident received an injection of the tainted medication in Indiana but could disclose no more information about the death.

Six Indiana clinics received the tainted steroid, including the South Bend Clinic and the OSMC Outpatient Surgery Center in Elkhart. A Massachusetts pharmacy has recalled the medicine.
