Suspended Deputy Quits After Inmate Confrontation

Posted: Updated:

JACKSON, Tenn. (AP) - A Madison County correctional officer has resigned amid an investigation into excessive use of force against an inmate.

The Jackson Sun reported Sgt. Lavonia K. Black thanked her colleagues in the letter of resignation she submitted Thursday. Black is 64 years old and had been with the Madison County Sheriff's Office for nearly 10 years.

Sheriff David Woolfork said Black was promoted to sergeant last year.

An internal investigation found Black violated department policies in a confrontation with a female inmate.
