CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - Montgomery County Sheriff Norman E. Lewis, Jr. passed away Sunday after a battle with leukemia.
A statement from the family said the long-time sheriff died at 3:39 p.m.
Norman was originally from Kentucky, but moved to Clarksville in the 1960s while working with the Tennessee Highway Patrol. He was originally elected in 1998, and served three terms as Sheriff.
Earlier this year, he underwent stem cell treatments in Texas.
Lewis is survived by his wife, one son and three daughters, and eight grandchildren.
Officials said Chief Deputy John Smith will run the department until they decide what to do.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by the Neal- Tarpley-Parchman Funeral Home. Details of the services and arrangements have not yet been released.
Lewis was 71 years old.
