Barbara MayfieldWILSON COUNTY, Tenn. - The woman who pleaded guilty to killing a 4-year old child and his grandfather in a DUI crash has been sentenced to 50 years in prison.
Barbara Mayfield was in Wilson County court on Tuesday. She will be eligible for parole in 15 years.
In August, Mayfield pleaded guilty to one count of aggravated vehicular homicide, one count of aggravated vehicular assault, third DUI, and second driving on a revoked license.
Lebanon police said the 45-year-old was driving drunk in July 2011, when she slammed into several vehicles at the intersection near East High and Cedar Streets. Four-year old Alton Barrett and his grandfather, James Barrett, were killed. The wreck left a third person, Ronnie Boyd, paralyzed.
Lebanon Police said Mayfield had a blood alcohol content of more than three times the legal limit at the time of the crash. Officers also said that Mayfield was speeding, going at least 60 miles per hour in a 30 mile per hour zone.
Her license was revoked because of her prior DUI convictions, one that occurred just two months before that accident.
Prior to the crash, Lebanon Police said Mayfield had been arrested more than 12 times, mostly for public intoxication.
Police said Mayfield was wearing a court-issued monitoring device around her leg when the wreck occurred.
In Tennessee, a conviction of aggravated vehicular homicide can carry as many as 60 years in prison.
