Social Media Sensation Dies Of Cancer At Age 13

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - The Kentucky boy who became a social media sensation for his upbeat, thumbs-up campaign has lost his battle with cancer.

The announcement of Lane Goodwin's death came on his Facebook page, which had 369,000 followers as of Thursday. The announcement said the 13-year-old boy died Wednesday evening and said the boy from Beech Grove had "gained his angel wings."

The Thumbs-up for Lane campaign drew social media fans worldwide. His followers included country music stars, Kentucky basketball coach John Calipari and Lane's favorite celebrity, The Turtleman.

Lane was a St. Louis Cardinals fan, and some Cardinals fans have held up signs in support of Lane during the baseball playoffs.

Henderson Gleaner, which first reported his death, said Lane was diagnosed with cancer in 2010 and had two relapses.
