CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - A report of a rape on Austin Peay State University's campus has been proved unfounded, according to campus police.
An alert was sent to all students and staff stating an incident occurred at the Blount Hall dormitory late on Tuesday night. It initially included the suspect's race, age, height, and even stating his name could possibly be "Dylan."
Bill Persinger, director of Communications, said Thursday evening following the investigation the APSU Police Department and CPD ruled the rape allegations unfounded.
"Whenever you have an allegation of a rape or a crime, it's always complicated because you truly don't know until a certain amount of time and you conduct an investigation, and so whenever we have a situation like this, we're always going to err on the side of caution," said Persinger.
Once the allegations were determined to be unfounded, the University sent out a second bulletin informing students of the new developments.
"We essentially did clarify that it was unfounded but that obviously means that whoever we name in the case as a suspect that the issue is resolved at this point," said Persinger.
Some of the students say it hasn't kept them from being extra cautious.
"If it was important enough to send every student that e-mail as a warning, then obviously it was important enough to investigate," said Alison Miller, an APSU student.
Persinger said the bulletin was sent out as a safety precaution and was provided because it is the duty of the institution to warn of possible "dangerous conditions" on or near its campus and falls under the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Police and Campus Crime Statistics Act.
