CLINTON, Tenn. (AP) - Anderson County authorities said the officer who fatally shot a man during a struggle with him was an unpaid volunteer reserve deputy.
Sheriff Paul White identified the officer as Steven Williams, who The Knoxville News Sentinel reported is also the lead investigator with Premiere Protection and Investigations of Clinton.
Williams declined comment to the newspaper.
Sheriff's Lt. Darrell Owenby said the foot pursuit of 30-year-old Randall Kyle Wilcox by Williams is not "out of the norm" for six senior reserve officers, who have the same authority as paid deputies.
Wilcox was fatally shot Saturday morning and White said it was during a struggle for Williams' service pistol. The reserve deputy was injured in the incident and was treated at a hospital.
The TBI is investigating the shooting.
