PORTLAND, Tenn.- A grand jury has indicted a former EMT and volunteer fire chief, accused of stealing from the home of a dead woman while on a call.
Ashley Choate was charged with official misconduct in August. Police said she was called to the home of a Portland woman who'd died of natural causes. While in the home they found cash in a vehicle parked inside the home's garage. When the officers went to collect and hand the money over to the family it was gone.
Choate later admitted to taking the $100, but then ripping it up because of guilt. She was fired from her EMS job, and resigned as chief of the Oak Grove Volunteer fire department.
