NASHVILLE, Tenn. – A man was killed in a shooting in east Nashville on Tuesday afternoon.

It happened just after noon in the 1600 block of Chase Street. Police said 32-year-old William Davis told them he answered a knock at his girlfriend's home on Chase Street just before noon. When he opened the door, he told police 19-year-old Alajawon Dillard was standing on the porch armed with a pistol.

Davis was also armed, and fired a shot at Dillard. He ran a short distance outside and collapsed.

"I'm really not sure what happened. I just heard the gentlemen that was coming out of the house screaming, 'they tried to rob me' and the little boy was laying there on the ground," said a neighbor who tried to help and called 911.

A jammed semi-automatic pistol was found next to Dillard's body. Police also recovered the gun believed to have been fired by Davis.

Davis was taken into custody for questioning, but has not yet been charged with a crime.

"It's sad because you know it's just another young person dead again in the neighborhood, you know. It's just awful," said Brenda Fletcher who lives nearby.

Detectives are continuing to investigate the circumstances of this entire matter.

Police said Dillard is a convicted armed robber who received a three-year mostly probated sentence in April. Davis was convicted of felony marijuana possession in January 2011 and received a one-year probated sentence.
