DICKSON, Tenn. – A man was arrested for shooting a man in front of two children following a night of trick-or-treating in Dickson, according to police.

Dickson Police charged Rodger Dale Waynick with attempted criminal homicide.

According to police, Matthew Jones had just finished trick-or-treating with his kids, ages 8 and 10, around 6 p.m. Wednesday when his ex-wife and her husband, Waynick, arrived to pick up the children.

Jones allegedly confronted Waynick, who was sitting in the car outside the home on Payne Springs Road, for allegedly hitting the children. The two got into a fight where Jones began punching Waynick through the window, according to police.

Police said Waynick pulled out a gun and fired a shot at Jones. When Jones tried to run away, police said Waynick fired another shot, which hit Jones in the back.

Jones' neighbor Brent Ham, who happens to be a Dickson County firefighter and a member of Dickson Police Department's SWAT team, was one of the first to respond and rushed to help the victim.

"I'm not a hero; I'm just fortunate to be in the position that I'm in," said Ham. "When we train, we let it become instinct."

Jones was taken by emergency helicopter to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville. Waynick was taken into custody at the scene.

The children witnessed the shooting, but were not hurt. The children's mother was also unhurt. The children are now staying with grandparents, and Waynick is out on bond.

Dickson County school officials said Matt Jones is the Football Coach at Creek Wood High School and a biology teacher.

The director of Dickson County Schools, Dr. Danny Weeks, told NewsChannel 5, Jones did not stop caring for his students and even called Thursday morning to let school administrators know what his students needed to be doing in class.

Weeks said extra counselors were on hand to help students.
