KINGSPORT, Tenn. (AP) -- A former Kingsport Police officer convicted of criminal impersonation and forgery has been granted judicial diversion.
Bryan Carter pleaded no contest last month to impersonating a former police employee when he sent an email accusing the police chief of misconduct. The message was sent in May to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, officials and the media.
The TBI found the allegations were unfounded. It also found that Carter sent the message without the knowledge of the former employee he impersonated.
Carter resigned in September.
The Kingsport Times-News reports a judge on Thursday granted Carter judicial diversion, which allows him to have his record expunged after a year of supervised probation.
Carter also was required to surrender his law enforcement certificate and complete 10 hours of community service each month.
