Coach Drumright Inspires Football Players At Brentwood High

BRENTWOOD, Tenn. - High school football season is in full swing, with playoffs beginning Friday in Tennessee for Class 6-A.

On every team, there's a coach, but maybe not quite like the one you'll see at Brentwood High School.

You can find 29-year old Matthew Drumright at the South Nashville Publix, helping with your bag, talking to your kids, and he may even walk you out to your car.

Though this may be his job, his passion is football.

"All the players call me Coach Drummy; it's my nickname," said Drumright.

As a manager for the Brentwood High School Football team, he's close to the game. He's been volunteering for the position since he was in high school, more than a decade ago.

"I feel a lot of special for that and every time we make a touchdown, a lot of players rub my head for good luck," said Drumright.

They may call him Coach Drummy, but it's his presence the players say they need more than his ability to draw up plays or run drills.

"He's always in a pretty good mood, so anytime you're feeling frustrated or angry, you kind of talk to him and see how he's doing mentally, and he'll put you in a better mood," said Logan Teichmann.

He even became part of Brentwood High's football history, when the team won the state championship ten years ago. The group reunited on the 50-yard line this year.

While he loves being on the sidelines, what Coach Drummy really wants is to be on the field.

Through the Special Olympics, Coach Drummy transforms to Drumright: No. 19.

But once the game begins, play time's over. It's the kind of playmaking that's won him 200 plus medals in the Special Olympics.

For those that get to meet Matthew Drumwright-- the player, the coach or the man behind your grocery store counter-- one thing remains constant: his ability to make an impression.
