NASHVILLE, Tenn.- A North Carolina man trying to make his way across the Appalachian Trail found himself stranded after Superstorm Sandy brought in five-foot high snowdrifts into the Great Smoky Mountains. It was a group based in Nashville who answered the call for help.

They were able to capture the whole rescue mission on camera.  Troopers with the Tennessee Highway Patrol were put on standby Thursday. When rescuers on foot couldn't find the stranded 56-year old, the troopers deployed early Friday morning. After following his footprints through the snow from their helicopter, the group spotted the man.

Trooper Jeff Buchanan was the one who dropped from the chopper to meet hiker Steven Ainsworth below in waist-deep snow.

Ainsworth was treated in Gatlinburg.
