Lady Vols Remain Confident Entering New Era

Posted: Updated:

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- This year's group of Tennessee Lady Vols is embracing the unique challenge of upholding Pat Summitt's legacy without her.

Summitt made Tennessee's women's basketball program the standard bearer for the sport, but now she has stepped aside.

The program has been turned over to new coach Holly Warlick, a Summitt assistant for 27 years.

Summitt announced last year she has early onset-dementia, Alzheimer's type and stepped down in April with 1,098 victories and eight national titles in 38 seasons. She remains on staff as head coach emeritus, attends nearly every practice is expected to be in the stands for all of Tennessee's home games.

She didn't leave the cupboard completely empty. Tennessee is ranked 20th, but it's the Lady Vols' lowest position in the Top 25 since February 1985.
