Posted: Updated:

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - A big loss for Tennessee Democrats in the 20th State Senate district.

Republican Steve Dickerson beat out Democrat Phillip North for the seat vacated by longtime Democratic Representative, Joe Haynes. Haynes held that seat for nearly 30 years.

He was one of several candidates to make an appearance at the Tennessee GOP watch party at the Marriott Vanderbilt on Tuesday night.

He said it was a long and tough campaign, and was relieved he was victorious.

Dickerson said he was honored his victory came on a night that was historic for Tennessee Republicans.

The race between Dickerson and North gained some notoriety in recent days as attack ads intensified, including one in which Dickerson accused North of litigation against Gibson Guitar.

North said he was just defending those sued by Gibson.

Dickerson's win helped bring Republicans to a supermajority in both houses.
