Clarksville Attorney Shot, Killed During Police Confrontation

Posted: Updated:

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - It could be several weeks before an officer-involved deadly shooting in Clarksville will be turned over to the District Attorney for review.

Officers were called to a Pond Apple Road residence on Saturday around 5:26 p.m. after 911 received a call about a man threatening to kill himself and his wife or anyone who tried to enter. Patrol officers arrived on scene and set up a perimeter around the home.

Officers were familiar with the man, identified as 46-year-old Todd Hansrote, and had been to the home before. The residence was known to have a large quantity of weapons inside.

The tactical team and negotiators arrived and took over the perimeter and attempted to make contact with him.  Negotiators were able to communicate with him, but eventually he refused to talk anymore. Then officers could hear shots being fired inside of the house.

Around 8:15 p.m., police said Hansrote eventually came out of the home and shot his firearm several times. That's when an officer fired back, killing Hansrote.

"This is something that some officers, their entire career never have happen. It's one of the most difficult things an officer has to do, potentially take a life, and in this case it was a threat to the community and the officer did what he had to do," said Officer Jim Knoll of the Clarksville Police Department.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation was called to investigate.
