High-Scoring Vols Face Big Test From Vandy Defense

Posted: Updated:

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Tennessee's offense relies heavily on big names and big plays. Vanderbilt's defense doesn't feature many of either.

Yet these two units have proved equally effective this season.

Tennessee (4-6, 0-6 Southeastern Conference) ranks 14th nationally in yards per game (495.1) and 20th in scoring (37.9). Vanderbilt (6-4, 4-3) ranks 16th in scoring defense (18.0) and 23rd in total defense (330.4).

Vanderbilt's hopes of beating Tennessee for the second time in the last 30 seasons Saturday could rest on whether its defense can cool off quarterback Tyler Bray and the Tennessee offense.

The Commodores had to replace their 2011 team leaders in tackles (Chris Marve), interceptions (Casey Hayward) and sacks (Tim Fugger). Vanderbilt has produced just eight takeaways, but the Commodores are allowing fewer points per game than they did last season.
