Posted: Updated:

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Police say a man was killed on I-40 east near the Old Hickory Boulevard exit Sunday morning after exiting his vehicle.

Officials say it started with a minor wreck involving two cars and a tractor-trailer on Interstate 40 east in Hermitage at 3:35 a.m. One of the drivers, 26-year-old Adam Carnes, got out of his pickup truck and was walking on the roadway when police say a Dodge Charger, not involved in the first wreck, struck and killed him.

The driver of the Dodge said he came upon the pickup truck stopped in the roadway and tried to stop but was unsuccessful. He hit the truck and Carnes. That driver was not injured and showed no signs of impairment.
