Posted: Updated:

COLUMBIA, Tenn. – Investigators believe a fire that killed a Columbia man and injured his wife was accidental, but have not been able to determine exactly what caused the fire.

The fire broke out around 1 a.m. Friday at the home on East 17th Street in Columbia.

Police said 41-year-old Loyd Shults was killed in the fire, as well as two dogs.

Two men were able to pull 42-year-old Karen Shults out of the burning home. She was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, but has since been released from the hospital.

Investigators from Maury County as well as from the State Fire Marshal's said the exact ignition source was not found due to the amount of fire damage, so it will be officially classified as undetermined.
