NASHVILLE, Tenn. – A man who was pulled over for speeding and DUI attempted to hide from police in the hospital ceiling where he was taken for a blood test, according to police.
Police said Charles T. Lawrence, Jr. initially caught the attention of police for going 120 miles per hour in a 70 mile per hour zone on I-40 west near Stewarts Ferry Pike. By the time police caught up to him he had slowed down.
They also said Lawrence didn't stop right away, even after seeing and hearing their sirens. The officer who stopped him said he could smell the alcohol on his breath, and said the driver was a little jittery.
He told police he'd had a few margaritas and agreed to do a blood test, so they took him to the hospital.
At Nashville General Hospital at Meharry, he asked to use the bathroom; after a few minutes, police started to hear noises coming from the ceiling above the bathroom. They went to check on Lawrence and found he had climbed up the ceiling and was trying to leave through an air duct.
Lawrence was taken into custody, and charged with DUI, tampering with evidence, escaping custody, and resisting arrest.
