CLARKSVILLE, Tenn.- Clarksville Police have sent out a warning to residents after a local woman was nearly scammed out of $5,000 by a person claiming to be a police officer.
Officials said a Clarksville woman received a call from a person who used the main number of the Clarksville Police Department, 931-648-0656, and told her she a warrant out of her arrest. The man, claiming to be a Clarksville Police Sergeant, said that if the woman did not pay $5,000 she would be arrested at her place of employment.
The woman was suspicious of the call and contacted the Clarksville Police Department after getting the call. She discovered that she had no warrant and the call she received was a scam.
Clarksville Police warn that the capability to clone phone numbers exists, so residents should be cautious. Anyone in doubt about the legitimacy of the call, even from the Police Department, should contact the organization directly to verify authenticity.
