First 'Giving Tuesday' Helps Local Non-Profit Organizations

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - A new national initiative to donate during the holiday season made its debut this week. Giving Tuesday is geared toward reminding people there is more to do than just shop this time of year.

"I think it's a very unique opportunity to remind people what Thanksgiving and the holidays are really all about," said Tasha Kennard from Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee.

Second Harvest is just one of 80 non-profit organizations in Middle Tennessee that took part in the first Giving Tuesday.

"Imagine if we could harness the power of Black Friday or Cyber Monday for non-profits across this country. We could do a world of good," Kennard said.

Tuesday night dozens of volunteers packed boxes at Second Harvest's Metro Center Food Bank. That is just one way to give back this holiday season that does not cost any money, just time.

"We're really excited to be a part of what we hope will become a national trend of Giving Tuesday," said Mary Jo Wiggins from United Way of Metropolitan Nashville.

Wiggins said Middle Tennesseans are always very generous this time of year.

"And most folks intend to give back and want to, but it sometimes slips our minds. So if we can make Giving Tuesday as well know of a day to remind us that it's time to give back, then we've done our job," Wiggins said.

Even thought it is called Giving Tuesday, you can still make a difference come Wednesday.

"If you didn't come out and volunteer, or didn't make a donation, that's ok, make a pledge to do it sometime this holiday season and then share your story," Kennard said.

Many of the participating organizations, like Second Harvest and United Way, have web sites where you can make a donation any hour of the day, any day of the week.
