LYNCHBURG, Tenn. - A family torn apart by tragedy is opening up about their constant heartache and the search for a killer.  23-year-old Kayla Qualls was brutally murdered, earlier this week.

Her parents tell NewsChannel 5 the days since then have been the hardest of their lives.

"It's horrifying, I can't sleep at night, it's like a dark cloud over the top of my head," said her father, Paul Qualls.  "It's like a nightmare I'm never going to wake up from."

From their home in Lynchburg, Paul and Kandy Qualls shared stories of the daughter they're now grieving.

"She was always my little klutz," said her mother, Kandy.  "She was a good kid though.  She was a really good mom.  She was trying to hard."

It was Monday morning, in a rural section of Franklin County, that two hunters found Kayla's red ford explorer, and her lifeless body inside the vehicle.

"You tell yourself, no, it's not your kid," said Kandy.  "And what monster would do that to her?"

That's what detectives are now trying desperately to figure out.  They say Kayla's home in Tullahoma and the neighborhoods surrounding it have provided some strong leads.

"She was a very cheerful person," said Kayla's father.  "She loved life, she loved her kids, tremendously."

The family says they will honor Kayla by making sure her children are taken care of.

A fund for the little girl and boy, who are both toddlers, has now been set up at Moore County Bank.  You can also make donations at any First Community Bank branch in Shelbyville.

Kayla's funeral is set for Sunday at 2 p.m.  It will be take place at Lynchburg Funeral Home.
