GALLATIN, Tenn. - Students from Gallatin High School are mourning the loss of William "Bubba" Dunn, a former football coach and former professional baseball player.

Dunn was at his home Saturday night when he died of an apparent heart attack.

The 43-year-old graduated from Gallatin High School in 1988. He went on to play baseball at Volunteer State Community College before being drafted by the Kansas City Royals in 1989.

After his professional career, he returned to Gallatin where he coached various positions and ran a successful private baseball training business.

"It's just crazy to see that a person so many people looked up to and so many people admired is not here anymore," said Jacques Williams.

Williams is Dunn's cousin, but was raised by him, and views Bubba as a father figure who shaped his life.

"It's hard to put in words," said Williams. "Bubba was a man of character.  He lived life at a higher standard."

On Saturday, in the hours leading up to his death, Dunn spent the morning working at the Gallatin Civic Center.

"He's just a great guy, he was always smiling, laughing, always in a good mood," said Page Jackson, who said he was more than a co-worker, he was a friend.

Dunn then spent the afternoon teaching a private baseball lesson.

He was hanging Christmas lights with his wife at their home in Gallatin when he collapsed.

"A lot of people are hurting today, a lot of people," said longtime friend Troy Martin. "God took him yesterday, he did.  But it made me think how I want to live my life from now on.  I'm nowhere near the person he is."

Funeral arrangements for William "Bubba" Dunn have not yet been set.

All day long, NewsChannel 5 has seen an outpouring of sympathy and support for his family, thru social media. News of his death spread quickly on social media, prompting an outpouring of sympathy from former and current students.
