TULLAHOMA, Tenn.- The man accused in the brutal murder of a young mother made his first appearance in a Coffee County court Monday morning.
A judge set a preliminary hearing date of January 22, 2013 for Michael Curtis. Curtis was arrested on Wednesday and charged with the murder of 23-year-old Kayla Qualls. Curtis is the father of Qualls' former boyfriend, who is the father of her two children. He's been jailed on a $1 million bond.
Investigators said Curtis killed Qualls at his home in Tullahoma, put her body in her SUV and then ditched it in Franklin County. Two hunters found the body on Monday.
A preliminary investigation revealed she died of blunt force trauma to the head.
Qualls left behind two children, ages three and four, who remain in DCS custody. A fund for the little girl and boy has been set up at Moore County Bank. Donations can also be made at any First Community Bank branch in Shelbyville.
