NASHVILLE, Tenn.- According to shipping companies, December 10th is the busiest shipping day of the year.
On a normal day, the Fed-Ex warehouse on Athens Drive sees about 8,000 packages. On December 10th the location saw close to 17,000 packages come into their location. With only 15 days remaining until Christmas, the race is on for gifts to get to their recipients on time.
"On a normal day FedEx express does about 9 million packages through the Memphis express facility, tonight we expect to do about 19 million," said Susan Shurling with Fed-Ex.
Fed-Ex said that Monday would more than double the company's typical daily volume as well as 10% increase from 2011. Officials site an increase in online shopping as the main reason for the jump.
To assist with the increased demand the company added an additional 20,000 seasonal positions in 2012.
For those last minute shoppers, Fed-Ex said the last day to send gifts in time for Christmas is December 17th. After that only premium delivery will ensure your packages arrive on time.
