Local Non-Profits In Need This Holiday Season

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Local non-profits are putting out the call for help, and said the number of families in need this holiday season is higher than ever.

At St. Luke's Community House in West Nashville, nearly 400 families have been identified that can't afford Christmas on their own.

"It's called Adopt-A-Family," said organizer Denice O'Neil. "We adopt 300 families, in addition we also have a hundred seniors, so in total 400 households are adopted."

Each year, O'Neil said Middle Tennesseans show up in a big way, to help their neighbors.  Many of them have been participating in the program for years.

"It gives you a lot of joy to be able to do that," said Kate Meriwether.

Her family has adopted a St. Luke's family every holiday season for the last decade.

"It makes you feel good, to know that you've really touched another family that really needs it, and that they probably would not have much of a Christmas without this," she said.

This year, though, the need is ever greater than in the past.

With Christmas just two weeks away, there are still families at St. Luke's that have not yet been adopted.

"It's a tough time of year, we all have our own families to buy for, but we're not asking for hundreds and hundreds of dollars per family," said O'Neil.

If you can't spend a lot of money, organizers suggest pitching in with a group of neighbors or co-workers.  They say every gift truly makes a difference.

To adopt one of the families at Saint Luke's Community House, call (615) 350-7893. You can find more information on their website as well: St. Luke's Community House: Adopt A Family.

Another non-profit that needs your help is the Last Minute Toy Store, at 61st Avenue United Methodist Church.
