LAVERGNE, Tenn.- After several business were evacuated and a Special Ops team from the Tennessee Highway Patrol called, a suspicious package found at a local bank was determined to be harmless.

The package was discovered by a customer at the Regions Bank on Murfreesboro Road in La Vergne at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

"(The customer) advised them there were some suspicious packages out beside their back door, which actually goes into a maintenance room there," according to Lt. Cynthia Murphy from the La Vergne Police Department.

As a precaution police evacuated the bank and a near-by liquor store.

"Better safe than sorry, we followed the procedures we needed to do to make sure and cleared out the area," Lt. Murphy said.

Police have not yet determined how the device ended up at the bank. Chief of Police Mike Walker said the package was found in an "out-of-place" sitting next to the mechanical room. They appeared to be a crocheted pillow and a large bottle of liquid.

"The fire department was able to do a litmus test on the liquid and they had another item there to shoot a laser through it to make sure all the liquid, and everything, was ok," said Lt. Murphy.

Officials with the Tennessee Highway Patrol confirmed that a Special Ops team was called to the location to assist local officers.

Just before 6 p.m. police said a test of the device showed that the package was harmless. Employees were let back into the surrounding businesses.
