SMYRNA, Tenn.- A man has been charged with killing his live-in girlfriend in Smyrna early Wednesday morning.

Police said around 5 a.m. they received an anonymous call saying someone at a home on Bolton Drive was overdosing on drugs. When officers arrived on the scene they found 40-year-old Maria Lambert inside the home.

Officers immediately noticed that Lambert did not appear to have overdosed on drugs. Police said the victim had multiple bruises on her body, and several stab wounds.

Lambert was taken to Stone Crest Medical Center where she was pronounced dead.

Upon further investigation, police charged Lambert's boyfriend, 42-year-old Kerry Tomlin, with first degree murder.

Neighbors tell NewsChannel 5 Lambert moved into Tomlin's Smyrna home several months ago and that he was a very good neighbor. They were shocked to hear police have accused him of killing his girlfriend.

Tomlin was taken to the Rutherford County Jail where he was being held on an $800,000 bond. He will make his first appearance in Smyrna General Sessions court on January 3.
