Homeowner Charged In New Year's Day Deadly Shooting

Posted: Updated:

GALLATIN, Tenn. - A man has been charged in a deadly shooting outside a Gallatin home on New Year's Day.

Officials said the body of 49-year-old William "Brodie" Reecer was found at a home at 825 Douglas Lane around 4 p.m. Tuesday. Reecer apparently died of a gunshot wound to the chest.

Deputies were called to the scene after a passerby witnessed the shooting.  The witness said a car was stopped in front of the house, and the driver approached the home.  The homeowner, Allen Ray Mefford, 51, who was sitting on the porch, went inside and returned with a shotgun, and fired a single shot at Reecer in the front lawn.

Mefford is being held on a second degree murder charge.  Officials said he was taken into custody without incident.

According to affidavits, Mefford and Reecer were reportedly arguing over drugs and money, which escalated into verbal arguments.  The two men were longtime friends.

Sheriff's deputies worked throughout the evening collecting evidence in and around the home, including a Ford pickup truck.

Neighbors said Mefford lived alone, and never caused any problems.  They said it was an unexpected scene on their normally quiet street.

"I thought it was an explosion at first," said neighbor Brian Stevens. "It sounded like a 12 gauge. I ran in the bathroom, I didn't know what it was or what was going on."

Maj. Linzy agreed it is normally a quiet neighborhood, and it was a tragic way to start the new year.

"We do not have a lot of homicides in Sumner County," said Maj. Linzy. "On the first day of the year that is unfortunate, and we're sorry for the families of both people."

Mefford is being held in the Sumner County Jail on $500,000 bond, and is scheduled to appear in court on January 11.
