Man In Custody After Standoff With Police In Rutherford Co.
RUTHERFORD COUNTY, Tenn. – Authorities took a suicidal man into custody after a two-hour standoff early Thursday morning.
Neighbors reported a disturbance overnight on Gresham Lane. Deputies arrived around 5:30 a.m. to find Christopher Roy Coelho, 42, inside an apartment. They learned he had been drinking since Wednesday morning, and threatened suicide.
Coehlo was wanted on a probation violation in Cannon County.
He was believed to be armed with a semi-automatic pistol. Deputies tried to talk with him through a loud speaker and his cell phone, but he did not respond.
The Rutherford County Sheriff's Office Felony Arrest Search Tactical along with crisis negotiators and Rutherford County Emergency Management Agency's Special Operations Response Team's Mobile Command Unit responded to the scene.
After repeated commands to surrender, he was taken into custody.
There were reports he had attempted to cut a tattoo off his own arm. Coelho was treated on the scene, and then taken to Middle Tennessee Medical Center.
Once he's released, he will be booked into Rutherford County Adult Detention Center where he will be held on the Cannon County charges. He does not face any charges from Thursday's standoff.
FAST Team members found a 22-caliber semi-automatic rifle and two large survival knives in Coelho's apartment.
Coelho's criminal history in Rutherford County includes charges of aggravated assault in 2001 and charges of DUI, evading arrest and aggravated assault in 2006.
