ANTIOCH, Tenn. - There has been mixed reaction since the announcement of the new name for the former Hickory Hollow Mall.
People living in that area wanted a fresh start for the property when new owners purchased it late last year. They played a role in coming up with the new name.
The Metro Council member for that area applauded the concept behind the mall's new name.
"The ideal of capitalizing on cultural, along with bringing retail and food and all of that together I think is a very interesting concept," said Councilman Jacobia Dowell.
But the lawmaker did question the use of the word mall in the center's new name.
"Mall has somewhat become synonymous with something old and closed space and one experience," Dowell said.
She explained what the owners have planned for the property far exceed what one would consider a mall. It will have retail, office space, restaurants, a college, community center, library and green space.
Dowell is hopeful over time the new name will transform like the area it now represents.
"Very rarely do we call it the actual name. I think we'll come up with a nice moniker for it and it'll be a great space for all of us to enjoy," Dowell said.
The Global Mall at The Crossings is set to have its grand opening on April 1.
