DA Won't Try Former Sheriff For Third Time

Posted: Updated:

ERWIN, Tenn. (AP) - The state prosecutor in Unicoi County won't attempt a third trial of a former sheriff on a charge of felony theft.

The Johnson City Press quoted District Attorney General Tony Clark, who said he is convinced trying Kent Harris again on the charge would not get a different result. Two previous juries were unable to reach verdicts.

Clark said he intends to file paperwork to dismiss the theft charge for a Jan. 29 hearing. At that court session, Clark also said he will discuss a decision on which of the remaining charges against Harris will be tried next.

Harris faces charges of evidence tampering, aggravated assault and official misconduct. In an email to the newspaper Wednesday, Harris said his innocence will be proven in future trials.
