JERSEY CITY, N. J. - Police in New Jersey want to speak with Tennessee Titans wide receiver Kenny Britt in connection with a stabbing incident over the weekend.
According to the Jersey Journal, Britt drove his close friend to a Jersey City hospital with stab wounds early Sunday morning. Earlier reports said the stabbed man was Britt's brother. The newspaper reported Britt was with the victim when he checked into the hospital, but was uncooperative with police and left the hospital.
The friend also reportedly was uncooperative with police. He was treated for a non-life-threatening wound to his back.
In a statement issued late Sunday night, a spokesman for Britt told the paper the ex-Rutgers standout was at a dinner, not a house party, and claimed Britt made himself available to speak with investigators.
"Kenny was leaving a dinner cooked by his friends' parents when he found his friend, who had left earlier, injured outside. Kenny immediately brought his friend to the hospital and was there with the injured friend's family for several hours, but was not otherwise involved in the incident," the statement read. "It was not a house party, Kenny's brother was not injured (and wasn't even there) and Kenny has made himself available to cooperate with the authorities investigation of this matter."
Police had originally been called to a stabbing and fight report at a birthday party around 3:30 a.m. Sunday, but no victim was found.
Approximately an hour and a half later, a gunshot was reportedly heard at the home near where the stabbing happened. Reports said the shot was heard just after Britt returned to pick up a woman who was said to be his girlfriend.
This becomes Britt's ninth known incident involving the police since the Titans took him in the first round in 2009. His most recent was a DUI arrest on Fort Campbell in July 2012.
He has made two separate visits to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell to discuss his off-the-field behavior. He was suspended for one game for the DUI arrest.
Other incidents include two arrests in 2011 in New Jersey, a car chase in April 2011, and an alleged assault at a downtown Nashville bar in 2010.
This is Britt's final year of his contract with the Titans.
