Inmate Escapes Custody While Wearing Handcuffs

Posted: Updated:

WARREN COUNTY, Tenn. – An inmate escaped custody during transport to McMinnville, while still wearing handcuffs.

Warren County Sheriff's deputies were transporting Dustin Gushwa from Chattanooga to the jail in McMinnville.

When they stopped for gas, he somehow slipped out of his leg shackles and took off running. Gushwa was still handcuffed, but he managed to get away.

The sheriff does not think the escape was planned, but Gushwa likely just took advantage of a moment when the deputy was distracted pumping the gas.

Authorities think he could be hiding in the McMinnville area.

There was no indication that he could be armed or dangerous. Gushwa was being held on a probation violation stemming from a domestic case.
