Report: Victims Were Shot Before House Fire

Posted: Updated:

HUMPHREYS COUNTY, Tenn. - Authorities said a medical examiner's report shows that a couple found dead inside their burned home in Humphreys County were shot prior to the fire.

Humphreys County Sheriff Chris Davis said that the report he received from the state medical examiner's office identified the bodies of Elaine Hewitt, an elementary school principal, and her husband, Carl.

Early-morning fires on January 16 destroyed two homes located about five minutes apart belonging to the Hewitts. Davis said DNA testing is needed to identify the third body found in the home, whom authorities believe is the couple's adult son, Wade Hewitt.

"The lack of some dental records and the devastation to the scene behind us-it's just hard to get that without fingerprints or something of that nature," said Chris Davis, the Humphreys County Sheriff.

Davis said a weapon was recovered at the scene and they do not suspect an outside party in the shootings.

"We feel at this time with all our circumstantial evidence that's leading us to believe that it was a family related matter," said Davis.

Elaine Hewitt was Principal at Erin Elementary School in neighboring Houston County.

A memorial service for the family has been planned for 5 p.m. Wednesday at Houston County High School at 2500 Highway 149 in Erin.

A small, private funeral for the family will be held Saturday in Waverly.
