Babies “Go Red” For Heart Disease Awareness

Posted: Updated:

NASHVILLE, Tenn.- On Friday, newborn babies at Baptist Hospital helped doctors raise awareness about heart disease in women.

As part of the National Wear Red Day, Baptist Hospital and Saint Thomas Heart at Middle Tennessee Medical Center provided red hats instead of the normal pink and blue hats to babies in their nurseries.

Roughly 100 red caps were knitted by volunteers and donated to the hospitals.

2013 marks the 50th anniversary of National Wear Red Day and is part of the American Heart Association's Go Red For Women initiative.

Medical leaders said that heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women age 20 and over, and it takes the lives of 1 in 3 women each year.
