KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Knox County Commissioner Richard Briggs has filed paperwork to challenge Sen. Stacey Campfield in next year's Republican primary.
According to WBIR-TV Briggs, a cardiac surgeon, says he wants to take District 7 "in a different direction."
Campfield, who is serving his first term as senator, has made headlines -- and occasionally been mocked -- for some of the bills he's proposed in the state Legislature.
One measure is the so-called "Don't Say Gay" bill, which seeks to ban classroom instruction or discussion of homosexuality. A new version of that legislation proposed this year would force schools to tell parents if their children have talked to a teacher or counselor about being gay.
