Summerville Apologizes To Black Caucus

Posted: Updated:

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- State Sen. Jim Summerville has apologized for an email he sent insulting the Legislature's black caucus.

In August, the Dickson Republican sent an email to then-black caucus chairwoman Barbara Cooper saying: "I don't give a rat's ass what the black caucus thinks."

The email was sent after the caucus issued a news release critical of a hearing Summerville led that looked into allegations of grade tampering at Tennessee State University.

Last month, Summerville sent an email addressed to "Cooper and friends" acknowledging losing his temper and calling his behavior "unbecoming."

Cooper, a Memphis Democrat, responded in an email that she forgave him.

As a result of the initial email, GOP leaders stripped Summerville of his higher education subcommittee chairmanship, and he later resigned from the Senate Education Committee.
