LOS ANGELES
- Law enforcement officers have engaged in a gun battle in the mountains of
California with a person believed to be a former Los Angeles police officer.
Two deputies were injured in the gunfire.
The noise
of the gun battle was broadcast by KCBS-TV, whose reporter suddenly found
himself near the fight. Someone could be heard yelling at the reporter to get
out of the area.
Road blocks
were up around Big Bear, where Christopher Dorner's burned-out pickup was found
Thursday. Authorities have been conducting a manhunt in the area since last
week.
Dorner has
been accused of killing a police officer, the daughter of another officer and her
fiancé.
Officials
said a man believed to be Dorner committed a burglary at a cabin and had a
couple tied up at the home. One of the victims was able to get away and call
police.
Authorities
responded and gave chase when the man believed to be Dorner fled in a stolen
vehicle. Gunfire was exchanged. KCBS reported the suspect ran on foot when officials
tried to pull the truck over.
A reporter
on the scene said a deputy with the San Bernardino Sheriff's Office told him
two deputies had been shot.
Authorities were still trying to get to the deputies to determine the severity of their injuries.
