MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – A Murfreesboro man has been arrested after police said he confessed to killing his wife.

Officials said 30-year-old Jacob Pearman called his parents Wednesday night and left them a troubling message about something bad he had done. They were worried for his safety and called police.

Detectives responded to the Pearman's home on Kanatak Lane near Fortress Boulevard around 3:30 a.m. Thursday to perform a welfare check. Police said they found the body of Pearman's 31-year-old wife, Carla Pearman.

Investigators said the woman had been beaten to death in her bed.

Jacob Pearman was not at the home. Police said he left the residence in his wife's vehicle. They were able to track him using his cell phone.

He was taken into custody around 5:50 a.m. nearly 40 miles away in Manchester.

Police said Pearman confessed to killing his wife.

It was not the first time Pearman had been in trouble with the law. He had been scheduled to appear in court Thursday morning to face child abuse charges involving Carla's 7-year-old son.

Neighbors awakened to the horrible news that Carla had been beaten to death in her own home.

"I went outside and I saw all that yellow tape. I just knew that's got to be a homicide or a child abduction," said one neighbor who wished not to be identified. "She was just young, upbeat… very pretty."

"I was really shocked. Especially here in this community," said neighbor Rick Rowe. "Everything seems pretty tight-knit."

Pearman was charged with first-degree homicide and booked into the Rutherford County Jail. He was being held without bond.

A preliminary hearing was scheduled for next week.
