HENDERSONVILLE, Tenn. – Police have arrested a man for allegedly shooting his wife in the head in Hendersonville and officials said the whole thing happened in front of their young children.

"She's not doing good. The doctors are saying that, she's probably not gonna make it," says Chelsee Witham, the sister of the woman who is in critical condition at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

When Hendersonville Police arrived at 111 LaSabre Drive around 10 p.m. Wednesday night they found Ashlee Witham Cundiff, age 26, with a gunshot wound to the head.

She was taken by LifeFlight to Vanderbilt University Medical Center with serious injuries.

The couple's two children were inside the home at the time of the shooting, but they were not hurt.

Her husband, 29-year-old Joseph Cundiff, was later identified as the shooter.

"I don't know, I don't know why. For years I've been begging my sister to leave this man," Chelsee said on Thursday afternoon.

Hendersonville Police said he was treated at Hendersonville Hospital for conditions unrelated to the shooting, and was taken into custody on disorderly charges as a result of his behavior at the hospital.

"I hate to say it but he (Joseph) deserves to be in jail for the rest of his life, if not worse than that," Chelsee added.

He was later charged with aggravated assault and unlawful carrying/possession of a weapon by a felon.

Cundiff was held at the Sumner County jail. A court date was scheduled for February 27.
