NASHVILLE, Tenn. – A man pleaded guilty Monday in a 2011 crash that killed a 68-year-old woman and injured her husband.
Steven Allen, 32, was sentenced to 10 years after pleading guilty to vehicular homicide by intoxication and vehicular assault.
Police said Allen had Soma and Xanax in his system when he crossed the center line on Clarksville Pike and struck Velma Burkhart's car head-on on August 11, 2011.
Burkhart was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where she died. Her husband, 74-year-old James Burkhart, was also injured.
Police found a bottle of hydrocodone pills in Allen's pocket at the time of the crash.
Allen also pleaded guilty to a felony drug charge in a separate case, and received a 6 year sentence for that charge. The two sentences will be served consecutively for a 16-year sentence.
